Nationwide Children's Hospital is seeking a Research Associate to join the Center for Microbe and Immunity in San Diego. This role supports a Principal Investigator in conducting independent research within the field of microbiology and immunology, managing both basic and complex projects from start to finish.

Day-to-day responsibilities include organizing and executing research experiments, collecting and analyzing experimental data using statistical methods, and maintaining accurate logs of methods, results, and conclusions. The associate prepares detailed reports, graphs, tables, and photographs for PI review, ensuring all timelines and deliverables are met.

Collaboration is key, as the associate works alongside other researchers conducting similar studies and serves as an experienced resource for junior staff. This individual also assists the PI in drafting scientific publications and grant proposals, and attends scientific conferences to present findings.

This position offers a pathway to deepen expertise in infectious disease research and build a strong publication and grant-writing portfolio. It also provides mentorship opportunities while contributing to high-impact studies in microbial pathogenesis and immune response.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field required; Master's Degree preferred
One year of post-degree research experience, or a Master's Degree, required
Ability to use research methods in generating and collecting data and analyzing data for report preparation
Ability to develop complex position papers and reports and assist in preparation of research grant proposals and scientific publications
Effective computer skills
Experience with standard laboratory safety practices, including handling biohazardous waste, chemicals, and pathogens
Capacity to interpret data and solve problems in a research setting

Responsibilities

Conducts independent research studies and laboratory analysis in conjunction with the Principal Investigator
Organizes research experiments, arranges subjects, and maintains detailed experimental records
Collects experimental data and conducts analysis in accordance with statistical procedures
Prepares reports, graphs, tables, and photographs of results for PI review
Collaborates with other researchers doing similar studies and mentors less experienced research staff
Assists the PI with preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals
Attends scientific conferences and gives scientific presentations
Orders and maintains inventory, ensures equipment is in working order, and prepares budget proposals
