About this role

An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Officer (Medicinal Chemistry) to join the New Medicines and Diagnostics Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is committed to translating biological discoveries into new treatments to tackle life-threatening diseases with unmet need. As part of its commitment to academic drug discovery, the division seeks a postdoctoral level scientist.

The successful candidate will join a small team dedicated to developing compounds for an industry program. The position requires flexibility, ability to explore a wide range of chemistry techniques and the ability to work within deadlines. Experience with parallel synthesis and knowledge of drug properties would be an advantage.

The candidate will work in a very collaborative environment and interact daily with biologists including screening, molecular, cellular and structural biologists. The ability to work independently and report on project progress through oral and written reports are strongly desired. Sound communication skills are essential.

This role offers involvement in cutting-edge medicinal chemistry within a leading research institute focused on new medicines. The position supports academic drug discovery efforts targeting unmet medical needs. It provides a platform for applying advanced synthetic skills in a translational research setting.

Requirements

  • BSc (or equivalent) with a PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry
  • Experience with modern synthetic techniques (e.g. anhydrous chemistry, metal mediated cross-coupling chemistry)
  • Experience with compound purification and analytical techniques
  • Sound communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Experience in parallel synthesis, heterocyclic chemistry, bioconjugation and/or chemical biology (desirable)
  • Strong work ethic and capacity to work independently
  • Ability to interact well with other lab members
  • Ability to trouble-shoot with meticulous attention to detail
