About this role

Join AstraZeneca Biologics as a Process Engineering & Packaging Leader and drive innovation in biopharmaceutical process development and technology transfer across UK and EU operations. This role develops early and late-stage clinical fill/finish processes, combination product assembly processes, and packaging for the biologics portfolio.

You will lead a high-impact team of scientists and engineers, bringing scientific rigour, practical innovation, and deep collaboration to sophisticated challenges. Day-to-day, you will oversee the process development of diverse biopharmaceutical dosage forms, including liquid and lyophilized formulations, novel drug delivery formulations, and drug delivery devices.

This position requires effective collaborative interactions with AstraZeneca Biologics and Global Biological Operations leaders, as well as internal and external manufacturing sites. You will build and maintain world-class technical capabilities while fostering a supportive community that values kindness alongside ambition.

In this pivotal role, you will elevate design for manufacturability, technology transfer, and packaging readiness to enable seamless scale-up across a global network. Requirements

  • Experience leading a team responsible for process development and packaging for clinical products
  • Experience developing robust drug product and device assembly processes for commercial production in collaboration with Operations
  • Experience working with late-stage formulation development, device development, clinical operations, supply chain, quality, and regulatory functions
  • Ability to lead a sophisticated scale-down fill/finish development lab
  • Proven ability to provide technical support for clinical and commercial production
  • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with AstraZeneca Biologics and Global Biological Operations leaders
  • Experience with diverse biopharmaceutical dosage forms including liquid and lyophilized formulations, nanoparticles, and high concentration formulations

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and strategic leadership for the development of drug product and device assembly processes, including design for manufacturability
  • Oversee development and technical support of clinical and commercial fill-finish processes, clinical packaging development, and commercial packaging support
  • Lead technology transfer to both internal and outsourced commercial manufacturing sites across the global network
  • Lead and manage a technical team of 8-10 scientists and engineers, including resource management, prioritisation, and critical assessment of technical work
  • Apply scientific and engineering knowledge and tools to issues and problems arising during development and execution of manufacturing processes
  • Maintain a strong technical culture and establish strong working relationships at internal and external interfaces
  • Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams whilst building world-class technical capabilities
  • Effectively lead in a matrix environment and influence broadly internally and externally
