About this role
The Principal Scientist, Drug Discovery in the Research and Development Department identifies new molecular entities and technologies for animal health from Company Laboratories or external partners including human pharma, biotech companies, and academia. This role drives advancement of novel targets. The position reports to the Distinguished Scientist and Global Head of Research & Development Liaison and Discovery – Non-infectious Diseases.
The successful candidate leads research programs from ideation through early research, proof-of-concept, and up to the development stage. They interface with researchers and senior management throughout the organization as well as external partners. Responsibilities include operating in a matrix structure to secure resources for Medicinal Chemistry, in vitro Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, and other areas.
Daily work involves advancing novel targets in animal health drug discovery within a collaborative matrix environment. The role requires interfacing across departments like Disease Models, Formulation Development, Safety & Toxicology. External collaborations with academia and industry partners are key.
This position offers opportunities to lead programs to development stage and influence global research strategy. It supports progression from ideation to preclinical proof-of-concept in non-infectious diseases. Growth includes managing budgets, contracts, and executive communications.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years industry or pharmaceutical research experience in drug discovery or preclinical research with a focus on in vivo pharmacology
- Advanced and thorough scientific knowledge in pharmacology, disease mechanisms and related preclinical models
- Expertise in one of the following fields: oncology, diabetes, respiratory & immunology, cardiology, pain & inflammation, reproduction, drug delivery or biotechnology
- Knowledge of regulatory aspects of pharmaceuticals including GLP, GCP and GMP
- Ability to manage multiple projects, including budgets, contracts, and timelines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- In Vivo Models, Assay Development, Biochemical Assays, Molecular Biology Techniques
- 10% Travel

- Independently plan, recommend and complete research programs
- Manage multiple projects including budgets, contracts, and timelines
- Prepare executive level presentations and documents
- Prepare patent applications in support of research efforts
