About this role

The Associate Director, Drug Discovery is a major contributor to the strategic development and success of the Institute for Advancing Medical Innovation (IAMI). This role works closely with the Director, leadership team, project managers, entrepreneurs-in-residence, and external collaborators. It drives scientifically robust drug discovery from biology/chemistry interface through in vivo preclinical proof of principle and clinical proof of concept.

Direct the scientific aspects of small molecule, cellular therapeutic, biologic, and radiopharmaceutical drug discovery projects from conception into clinical development. Lead creation and advancement of all new IAMI drug discovery programs. Develop and refine strategic plans defining internal competencies, capabilities, and external partnerships to support a rich project portfolio.

Report directly to the Director of IAMI and collaborate with product development teams, KUCTC, and BioNovus Innovations LLC. Define drug discovery plans, patenting, and licensing strategies to advance projects. Support University priorities including KUCC, Frontiers Institute, Children’s Mercy Kansas City, and Stowers Institute for Medical Research.

Direct IAMI’s immunotherapeutic discovery and development programs and provide input to investment decisions. Train and educate graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, tenure-track faculty, and clinician scientists in entrepreneurship principles. Hold adjunct or tenure-track appointment in appropriate department, interacting with key opinion leaders, entrepreneurs, and business partners.

Requirements

  • Direct scientific aspects of small molecule, cellular therapeutic, biologic, and radiopharmaceutical drug discovery from conception to clinical development
  • Drive translational science from biology/chemistry interface through preclinical proof of principle and clinical proof of concept
  • Lead immunotherapeutic discovery and development programs
  • Define drug discovery plans, patenting, and licensing strategies with academic-industry partners
  • Train graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, faculty, and clinician scientists in entrepreneurship and innovation principles
  • Collaborate with research centers like KUCC, Frontiers Institute, Children’s Mercy, and Stowers Institute
  • Interact with key opinion leaders, entrepreneurs, and business development partners

Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation and advancement of all new IAMI drug discovery programs
  • Lead development and refinement of strategic plans defining internal drug discovery competencies, capabilities, and external partnerships
  • Support execution of licensing and partnering strategies
  • Monitor the management of alliance relationships as the relationship manager
  • Assist the Director in establishing and managing partnerships with government agencies, philanthropic organizations, patient advocacy groups, academic institutions, and industry
  • Direct IAMI’s immunotherapeutic discovery and development programs
  • Provide input to IAMI investment decisions to translate discoveries into medical innovation technologies
