Element has a current opening for a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist to join the growing team in North Liberty, IA. This role works with scientific staff to generate and provide next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, including project reports, publications, and custom analysis. The position builds and executes tools for data processing workflows to facilitate data interpretation and provides data management support.

The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist handles day-to-day data analysis of genomes and contributes to creating or enhancing tools to visualize complex genomic data sets. Responsibilities include improving methods for assembling NGS data. The role also serves as functional and technical supervisor to junior Bioinformatic Scientists.

Collaborate with scientific staff to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies. Develop bioinformatic software, analysis pipelines, and applications to make genomics results available to colleagues and superiors. Engage in consulting on large molecular datasets such as genomic sequence data for research purposes.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a biological science or a related degree and 5+ years of experience in the field
  • Experience generating next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis including project reports and publications
  • Proficiency in building and executing tools for data processing workflows and data management
  • Skills in day-to-day analysis of genomes and visualization of complex genomic data sets
  • Ability to improve methods for assembling NGS data
  • Experience supervising junior Bioinformatic Scientists functionally and technically
  • Knowledge of analyzing large molecular datasets for research purposes

Responsibilities

  • Develop bioinformatic software, analysis pipelines and applications to make genomics results and findings available to colleagues and superiors
  • Develop new software applications or customize existing applications to meet specific scientific project needs
  • Communicate and contribute genomic results through conference presentations, scientific publications, and project reports
  • Create novel computational approaches and analytical tools as required by research goals
  • Consult with scientific staff to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies
  • Analyze large molecular datasets such as genomic sequence data, and proteomics data for clinical or basic research purposes
  • Improve user interfaces to bioinformatics software and databases
  • Test new and updated bioinformatics tools and software
