Daily tasks include executing routine and complex lab procedures with precision, evaluating quality control data, and documenting maintenance for instruments. They recognize deviations, equipment issues, and factors affecting results, taking appropriate actions. Inventory monitoring and supply management are also key responsibilities.
Professionals work independently within guidelines, applying problem-solving skills to meet deadlines and urgent needs. They review and suggest revisions to test procedures and participate in evaluations of new tests or instruments. This onsite environment fosters hands-on laboratory operations.
Team members instruct and train employees and students, potentially assessing competency. Opportunities include obtaining required certifications within 12 months of hire. The role emphasizes continuous improvement in high-complexity testing under CLIA guidelines.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or Basic Science.
- No experience required.
- Must obtain certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Board of Histocompatibility or Immunogenetics (ABHI) or equivalent within 12 months of hire.
- Qualifies as Testing Personnel for high complexity testing under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).
- Preferred: Specialty certification in the area of operation issued by ASCP, AMT, or ABHI.
Responsibilities
- Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures with accuracy and precision, following standard procedures and recognizing deviation from expected results.
- Reviews and evaluates accuracy of lab data and reports patient results with all required documentation.
- Performs, records and evaluates quality control data according to procedures including checking expiration dates and documentation of QC performance before use.
- Performs and documents required maintenance procedures for laboratory instruments and equipment as assigned.
- Recognizes equipment malfunctions and troubleshoots according to protocol.
- Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action.
- Monitors inventory for proper levels, notifies person responsible for ordering when supplies needed, and receives and unpacks supplies when delivered.
- Instructs and trains employees and students, and may assess staff for competency.
