About this role
The Metabolism Drug Discovery Unit (M-DDU) within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) seeks a Senior Principal Scientist, Lab Head. This role leads groundbreaking efforts in metabolic disease research, contributing to the early stage cardiometabolic pipeline including obesity and comorbidities. Drive efforts from target identification through clinical candidate advancement.
Implement and shape the target and drug discovery portfolio in cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease. Conduct experimental biology with a lab team focused on disease biology, target discovery and validation. Apply expertise in metabolic pathways at molecular, cellular and organismal levels.
Work alongside world-class scientists, computational biologists, therapeutic engineers and clinicians across Genentech/Roche. Report to a Group Leader/Distinguished Scientist while building a team of approximately 2 direct reports. Partner closely with Drug Development, Translational Medicine and Clinical Science teams.
Expand disease-area biology and advance transformative medicines through interdisciplinary collaboration. Foster a collaborative, high-performance team culture and mentor scientists. Communicate findings to governance boards and author IND reports.
Requirements
- Passionate about revolutionizing treatments for obesity, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disorders
- Driven by connecting human biology to therapeutic development
- Expertise in biological pathways of metabolism, appetite regulation, energy homeostasis, nutrient flux and their dysregulation in disease
- Ability to design, run and interpret experiments at the molecular, cellular and organismal level
- Experience establishing experimental models of disease applicable to genetic or drug screening and human metabolic disease
- Practical understanding of drug discovery optimization, screening cascades and key biology experiments for go/no-go decisions
- Strong interdisciplinary collaboration across Drug Development, Translational Medicine and Computational Science
- Skilled in communicating findings, authoring IND reports and publishing impactful discoveries
Responsibilities
- Build and manage a team of approximately 2 direct reports of expert experimental biologists focused on metabolic disease biology, target and drug discovery
- Conduct experimental biology in support of disease biology, target discovery and validation
- Apply expertise of biological pathways of metabolism, appetite regulation, energy homeostasis, nutrient flux and their dysregulation in disease to design, run and interpret experiments
- Establish and leverage experimental models of disease, including genetic or drug screening models and complex human-relevant models
- Serve as biology lead in preclinical metabolism drug discovery programs, guiding evaluation and development of novel therapeutics for cardiometabolic diseases
- Partner closely with internal teams across Drug Development, Translational Medicine, Computational and Clinical Science to drive innovative therapeutic strategies
- Communicate findings to internal meetings and governance boards, author IND reports, and publish scientific discoveries
- Manage day-to-day lab operations, ensure compliance for ELN and documentation, and oversee external collaborations
